You've probably talked to Siri, watched a show Netflix picked for you, or seen a phone unlock itself just by looking at your face. All of that is Artificial Intelligence — AI — quietly working behind the scenes. Today, you start figuring out exactly what that means.
Robo says: "Hi, I'm Robo! I'm going to be your guide through this whole AI adventure. By Class 10, you'll understand more about AI than most adults do!"
What Is Intelligence?
Before we can understand ARTIFICIAL intelligence, we need to think about what intelligence itself means. Intelligence is the ability to learn, understand, solve problems, and make decisions. Humans and animals show intelligence every day — figuring out a puzzle, remembering a friend's name, or deciding what to do when it starts raining.
What Is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence is technology built to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, like recognizing pictures, understanding language, or making predictions. It's "artificial" because it's created by people using computers and data, not born with a brain the way humans and animals are.
AI Vs. Computer Programs
A traditional computer program follows a fixed set of instructions written by a programmer — if X happens, do Y, exactly the same way every single time. AI is different: instead of following one rigid rulebook, it learns patterns from examples (called data) and uses what it learned to handle new, never-seen-before situations.
Traditional program: a calculator always adds 2+2 the exact same way
AI: a photo app learns to recognize YOUR dog specifically, after seeing enough photos of it

Curiosity and an open mind!
Activity
Play "AI or Not AI?" — sort a list of technologies (a calculator, a voice assistant, a toaster, a face-unlock feature, a simple alarm clock, a recommendation feed) into AI and Not AI. Then discuss where you've personally seen AI, and watch a short demonstration with an AI chatbot.

- • The term "Artificial Intelligence" was first used all the way back in 1956, at a summer research conference — decades before smartphones, the internet, or anything we'd recognize as modern AI existed!

With a partner, watch a short demonstration of an AI chatbot answering a question. Then try to "stump" it by asking something tricky or unusual, and record what happened.
